There isn't a cutoff. What decides a cleanup isn't how long it's been — it's whether the records still exist. Bank and credit card statements, or a login that can still pull them. If the statements are gettable, the books can be rebuilt. Going further back costs more time. It doesn't make it impossible.
The thing that actually makes a cleanup harder is a set of books somebody half-did and then walked away from. Untangling that is slower than building from statements, and every so often starting clean is the better call. I'll tell you which one you're looking at before you commit to anything.
And the part you're actually asking about: you won't embarrass me. Books get behind because somebody was busy running a business. That's the normal reason, and it's where most people start.
What a cleanup actually involves
Roughly this, in this order. How long each part takes comes down to how many months there are and how much moves through the accounts.
Find out what exists
Statements, logins, whatever is already sitting in QuickBooks, the shoebox if there is one. I need to know what we're building from before I can tell you what it will take.
Rebuild the months
Transactions in, categorized, and every account reconciled against its statements, so the balances are actually right rather than just plausible.
Chase the gaps
There are always some. A missing statement, a transfer sitting in income, six months of a card nobody mentioned. This is the part where I come back to you with questions.
Close it out
Each period closed, with a profit and loss and a balance sheet for every year we rebuilt. Those are the reports your CPA is going to ask you for.
Decide what's next
Some people want monthly bookkeeping from there so it doesn't happen twice. Some just needed to be current and are fine from here. Both are real answers.
I don't do taxes. Getting you current is the bookkeeping half. Once the years are rebuilt and closed, your CPA has something real to work from, and I'm happy to talk to them directly.

Catch-up and cleanup is quoted on its own rather than folded into a monthly rate — hourly or fixed, depending on how many months there are and what shape they're in. It sits under add-ons with the rest of the pricing on the homepage.
I'd rather look at what's actually there than guess at a number and revise it later, so the quote comes after we've talked. We settle it before you commit to anything.
